Puppies, 7 to 31 days old, were placed in 3 age groups: group 1, of 7 to 13 days, weaned for 6 to 8 h before the experiment; group 2, of 14 to 31 days, weaned only for 2 to 3 h; and group 3, of 14 to 28 days, weaned for 6 to 8 h. For comparison, 4 healthy adult dogs, fasted overnight, were used. Blood was drawn from the coronary artery and coronary sinus for estimation of plasma non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) by gas chromatography. There was no substantial difference in the composition of NEFA in arterial blood among the individual groups of puppies. Oleic acid was the greatest component of NEFA in all dogs but the value was significantly higher for adults. Palmitic acid was the second greatest component but was not significantly different for adults and puppies. Concentrations of stearic and arachidonic acids in arterial blood were significantly higher in puppies than in adults. Passsage of blood through the myocardium changed the composition of NEFA. In puppies oleic acid concentration was greater in coronary sinus blood than in arterial blood, but the opposite was found in adults. Palmitic acid concentration was higher in venous than in arterial blood for all puppies, except the older puppies weaned for 6 to 8 h; the opposite for adults. Stearic and arachidonic acids were significantly lower in venous than in arterial blood of puppies and the opposite for adults. The myocardial extraction coefficients of palmitic, palmitoleic, oleic and linoleic acids were negative in young puppies and older puppies weaned for 2 to 3 h, positive in older puppies weaned for 6 to 8 h, and in adults had even greater positive values. Myocardial extraction of linolenic and arachidonic acids occurred only in puppies. The extraction coefficient of stearic acid was no different for adults and puppies.
