In the brain tissue there exists a highly active "pool" of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA). The greatest part of NEFA comes from the fraction of nerve endings. It was evidenced that the model convulsive activity provoked by Bemegrid increased NEFA in the brain cortex, hypothalamus and brain stem. Antiepilepties.sbd.diazepam, mephenytoin, trimethadione, methsuximide and valproate.sbd.markedly decreased the convulsive increase of NEFA. The greatest differences in the effect of antiepileptics were observed in the brain stem. The greatest inhibitory effect exerted mephenytoin, the smallest diazepam and valproate. The different level of membrane stabilization of the brain stem may be the cause of different effect of individual antiepileptics on various types of convulsions.
