The cost evaluation of mollusciciding operations on five irrigation schemes in Kenya

Five irrigation schemes in Kenya (at Mwea/Tebere, Ahero, Hola, Perkerra and Bunyala), begun between 1958 and 1969, are described. At each area, mollusciciding programmes have been carried out and details are given of molluscicides used, dosage rate and method and frequency of applications. The costs of the programmes are also reported in detail and these compared favourably with similar schemes in other parts of Africa and South America. While treatment appeared to be partially successful in some areas, no details are given of the effect of treatment on snail counts or schistosomiasis transmission. In at least one area (Hola), there was still a high prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium.
