The potential contribution by engineers to schistosomiasis control in irrigation schemes in Zimbabwe is examined. The article describes the impressive achievements attained in the Triangle and Hippo Valley Estates through the use of molluscicides over the 29 500 ha of irrigated land, but at a considerable annual recurrent cost [see also Trop. Dis. Bull., 1985, 82, abst. 539], and the more modest Mushandike Irrigation Scheme of 4000 ha where snail control is being undertaken through engineering measures, the results of which are being assessed in a pilot project.James Haworth.
