It is calculated that the snail control programme (using N-tritylmorpholine) initiated in 1969 at the Mwea Irrigation Settlement, Kenya, is limiting the population of Biomphalaria pfeifferi to about 4% of its initial level and also limiting the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni. It is considered that the costs (annual cost/person protected is about $0.19) compare favourably with those for other irrigation schemes and are considerably lower than those estimated for chemical control in natural habitats.
