Amino acids in plant tissue were extracted with acid or alkaline 70% ethanol, purified by chromatography on Dowex 50 X 4, eluted with NH4OH, evaporated and dissolved in methanol and water (4:1). S-Methylmethionine, indentified after 2-dimensional chromatography on silica gel G with methanol, chloroform and 25% NH4OH (2:2:1) then phenol and water (3:1) as solvents and treatment with ninhydrin, was eluted with methanol and estimated colorimetrically.
