Protective antigens in bovine pasteurellosis

The type-specific capsular antigens of Pasteurella multocida types B and E were extracted and purified. Antisera raised against them in cattle protected mice on subcutaneous injection against an intraperitoneal challenge of the homologous organisms. Groups of cattle were immunized with graded doses of capsular substance adjuvanted with aluminium hydroxide. When challenged with ca 100 LD50 all the control and some vaccinated animals died showing a graded response to the different vaccine doses. Pre-immunization sera from cattle did not protect mice in passive protection test. The mouse-protective titre of sera taken from animals immediately prior to challenge was shown to be related to resistance of cattle to the experimental disease.
