Plasma concentrations of cortisol, CA2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ were estimated in a group of 41 healthy women, aged 19 to 44 years, in a basal state after an overnight fast and also on 4 of them on 2 different circadian cycles. No difference was found in the plasma cortisol and cation concentrations due to the menstrual cycle; there were significant correlations between Ca2+ and Mg2+ rhythms which were related to the cortisol rhythm only during a normal sleep-wake cycle; 1 week was sufficient time for the cortisol peak to adjust to a reversed work-sleep cycle, but not for the cations.
