The frequency of sepsis related to IV infusion therapy is low and rarely recognized. In spite the low risk of catheter related sepsis, less than 1%, there are approximately 176,000 cases of hospital acquired bacteremia every year. Of these one third is related to intravenous devices. These infections have now more prominence as the result of the increased use of central venous lives and of prolonged use IV catheters. We present in this article the incidence, pathogenesis, microbiology, diagnosis, prevention and management of these infections.
