In order for American mental health professionals to perform a valid clinical judgements of Hispanic clients, an understanding of the Spanish language and a basic knowledge of their culture is required. The sensitive culture approach is necessary to know in order to perform satisfactory assessment and diagnosis. Without an adequate understanding of the different Hispanic cultures unreliable diagnosis may be offered when hispanic patients are evaluated in a nondominant language such as English. Mental health researchers have obtain conflicting results on which language do Hispanic patients express greater psychopatology (i.e. Spanish or English). Further research is suggested for elucidate this issue.
