Central venous catheters in 765 patients were controlled from 1976 to 1980 at the Department of Radiology of the St. Josef Hospitial at Heidelberg, (West Germany). These control checks revealed that the position of the catheters required correction in 42.3% of the cases. The rate of complications was 1.05%. Attention is drawn to the importance of correct positioning of the catheter to avoid complications, and to the need for radiological control of the catheter position.
