Smallpox was a dreaded disease because of its high morbidity and mortality. Thanks to the discovery of vaccination by Edward Jenner at the end of the 18th century this disease became preventable. Nowadays it has been eradicated and vaccination is not even required. The history and geography of smallpox is discussed along with its influence in art especially numismatics and iconography.
