Comparative therapeutic evaluation of some schistosomicidals in human intestinal mansoniasis

Niridazole in 10 oral doses of 15 mg/kg body-weight, 6% tartar emetic in 12 intravenous doses of 0.033 ml/kg, sodium antimony dimercaptosuccinate in 5 intramuscular doses of 8.3 mg/kg or 3% piperazine diantimonyl tartrate in 12 intravenous doses of 0.033 ml/kg were given on alternate days to 80 men in Egypt with Schistosoma mansoni infection. The greatest parasitological cure rate and percentage ova reduction were obtained with niridazole and the least with piperazine diantimonyl tartrate. Sodium antimony dimercaptosuccinate was the most effective in cases with colonic polyposis. Tarter emetic most frequently and piperazine diantimonyl tartrate least frequently produced side-effects.
