Of 513 children with severe diarrhoea, 46 (8.96%) were infected with Entamoeba histolytica. Infection was most common in the age group one to 5 years. 4 different patterns were recognized by rectoscopy. Amoebae were identified in mucus taken during endoscopy in 91.3% of cases. Raised serological antibodies were recognized by counterimmunoelectrophoresis in 48% of cases during the acute phase and 74.4% during convalescence. ELISA was positive in 29 (72.5%) of 40 cases. 26 patients were treated with metronidazole and 20 with emetine; the results and the tolerance were good in both groups.
