46 persons with chronic intestinal amebiasis were treated. Three antibiotics, seven chemiotherapeutic drugs and one placebo were used at random under "double -blind system". All patients passed Entamoeba histolytica in their faeces. All infected familiar contacts were simultaneously treated. In order to receive any drug, the family had to have potable water and adequate fecal disposal. Active sanitary information was done both in the O.P.D. and at home. Control was made by 2 serial fecal examinations started respectively 10 and 40 days after the treatment. Each scrie consisted of 3 specimens taken one every other day. Every specimen was studied by a double system in order to diagnose both cysts (Concentration by centrifugation with saline formol and ether) and thophozoites (Polivinyl alcohol with Schaudinn fixative). The cure percentages obtained were: Phenanthronedione: 73%; Bismuth glycolylarsanilate: 68%; Chlorbethamide: 67%; Diiodohydroxyquinoleine: 66%; Oxytetracycilne: 61%; Yodochlorhidroxyquinoleine: 59% Chlorphenoxiamide: 58%; Racemic dihydroemetine: 52%; Demethylchlortetracycline: 48% and placebo (starch): 28%. Yodochlorhydroxyquinoleine, phenanthronedione and diiodohydroxyquinoleine showed the best tolerance; on the other hand, racemic dihyclroemetine and demethylchlortetracycline were ill tolerated. 5 (18%) out of 28 persons which received placebo had some intolerance symptoms. The importance of using the "double-control system" to check antiamebic treatments is discussed and empliazised. It is not possible to compare the results obtained by authors that use the "double-control system" with those using only one technic to diagnose either cysts or trophozoites. Tetracyclines are not justified in the treatment of chronic intestinal amebiasis. Any of the chemiotherapic drugs tested can be considered as the ideal antiamebic drug, but phenanthronedione, of all of them, was the closer to that ideal.
