Ronnel, an oral organophosphate drug, was used in a clinical trial involving 57 patients with Schistosema mansoni infection in Puerto Rico. It was given in doses ranging from 1.25 to 2.0 g. daily for 3 consecutive days. Its efficacy in suppressing oviposition was minimal or absent, although it proved to be remarkably non-toxic, both from the clinical observations and as shown by the absence of significant depression of red blood cell cholinesterase. The necessity for control groups in such trials is emphasized, since transitory depressions of oviposition may occur in untreated cases.
