Cryptococcus neoformans: their identification in body fluids and cultures by mucicarmine stain (Mayer)

C. neoformans was demonstrated in dried smears of cerebrospinal fluid, blood and sputum from 2 proven cases of cryptococcosis using the stain. Cultured C., suspended in blood and sputum, was also examined. Cryptococci were readily detected. They were not observed in patients' blood, but were visible in normal blood mixed with culture suspension. Candida albicans, in similar preparations, did not stain.
