White mice were infected intracerebrally with 500 000 C. cells in suspension to investigate the effect of C. neoformans on the central nervous system 2 h-26 days after infection. Already at 2 and 4 h fungal cells were seen in the pia mater of the longitudinal cerebral fissure area. On subsequent days the number of C. neoformans cells increased in the subarachnoid space, being most pronounced in the cisterna of the brain base and on the dorsal surface of the cerebellum. Large quantities were also visible in the lumen of ventricles. In addition discontinuity of the pia mater and damage of superficial layers of the cerebral and cerebellar cortex were observed. From the 2nd day after infection small lacunae were found in various deeper areas of the brain. Such lacunae were later more numerous and multivesicular.
