In 95 hypertensive Dunedin women receiving treatment, urine volume and 24-h excretion of Cd were greater than those of 107 normotensive women of similar age, 30 to 59 years. Excretion of Zn was similar in the 2 groups. Excretion of Cu, measured in 26 of the hypertensive and 68 of the normotensive women, was higher in the hypertensive. Twenty control subjects with blood pressure above 150/90 mmHg had similar urine volumes and excretions of Cd and Zn to those of normotensive subjects. The reason for the greater excretion of Cd and Cu in hypertension is unknown; Dunedin water supplies are classified as soft but analysis revealed no detectable cd.
