Alterations in blood concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd and Mg were studied in 18 cases of acute myocardial infarction. In comparing with normals, significant decrease in serum Zn concentration was observed on the 2nd and 3rd days after infarction in the survival group (P < 0.01). In the nonsurvival group, serum Zn concentration on the 4th day after the onset was significantly lower than that in the survival group (P < 0.05); thus serum Zn concentration might be used as a criterion for prognosis. Serum Cu and blood Cd concentrations were significantly higher in cases with acute myocardial infarction than in normal controls, while serum Zn concentration was lower. No significant difference was found between patients with angina pectoris and normal controls. Furthermore, no significant change in serum Mg concentration was found in the course of acute myocardial infarction.
