In 178 milk samples from healthy Indian women who had term delivery, copper, zinc, magnesium and cadmium contents were estimated by wet digestion with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Cu in colostrum was 0.72 plus or minus 0.23 mu g/ml, in transitional milk 0.62 plus or minus 0.16 mu g/ml and in mature milk 0.39 plus or minus 0.09 to 0.21 plus or minus 0.07 mu g/ml. Zn in colostrum was 9.32 plus or minus 1/63 mu g/ml, in transitional milk 6.71 plus or minus 1.21 mu g/ml and in mature milk 2.90 plus or minus 0.47 to 2.16 plus or minus 0.38 mu g/ml. Mg in colostrum was 46.22 plus or minus 15.77 mu g/ml, in transitional milk 40.71 plus or minus 13.29 mu g/ml and in mature milk 38.18 plus or minus 14.21 to 39.66 plus or minus 12.90 mu g/ml. Cd in colostrum was 2.0 plus or minus 0.71 mu g/100 ml, in transitional milk 1.5 plus or minus 0.43 mu g/100 ml and in mature milk 1.6 plus or minus 0.19 to 1.7 plus or minus 0.13 mu g/100 ml. Cu and Zn showed a significant decrease from colostrum to transitional and mature milk. Mg showed a slight decrease in transitional milk and then remained stationary. Cd showed no significant decrease from colostrum to mature milk. Cu, Zn, Mg and Cd were determined by AAS in 50 samples of colostrum (2-5 days post partum), 43 samples of transitional milk (6-10 days) and 85 samples of mature milk ( more than 10 days) collected from Indian women delivering at term. For colostrum, transitional milk and mature milk, resp., mean values were: Cu, 0.72 +or- 0.23, 0.62 +or- 0.16 and 0.39 +or- 0.09 to 0.21 +or- 0.07 micro g/ml ( more than 6 months); Zn, 9.32 +or- 1.63, 6.71 +or- 1.21 and 2.90 +or- 0.47 to 2.16 +or- 0.38 micro g/ml; Mg, 46.22 +or- 15.77, 40.71 +or- 13.29 and 38.18 +or- 14.21 to 39.66 +or- 12.90 micro g/ml; and Cd, 2.0 +or- 0.71, 1.5 +or- 0.43 and 1.6 +or- 0.19 to 1.7 +or- 0.13 micro g/100 ml. Results are compared with literature values.
