Serum magnesium in acute myocardial infarction and acute coronary insufficiency

Serum levels were studied in acute infarction and acute coronary insufficiency and a correlation was sought between Mg levels and levels of the cardiac muscle enzymes CPK . The determinations were made on the 1st, 3rd and 7th days after hospitalization in the coronary care unit and prior to discharge. In 40 patients with myocardial infarction Mg levels were lower on the 1st day following infarction than during the 2nd hospital wk, but lower during the 2nd hospital wk than in controls. In 20 patients with coronary insufficiency Mg levels were lower than in the controls, but there were no significant differences in levels related to duration of hospitalization. The decrease in Mg accompanied a rise in serum cardiac muscle enzyme levels, but this relationship was not statistically significant. The fact that Mg levels remained low during the 2nd wk following acute myocardial infarction and in coronary insufficiency indicates that low serum Mg may play a causative role in ischemic heart disease.
