Blood glucose levels were determined on admission in 1295 patients diagnosed as having acute myocardial infarction when hospitalized. The hospital mortality rate of the whole group was 16.5%. It was 10.6% among 697 nondiabetic patients with admission blood glucose levels lower than 140 mg/dl, while among 173 nondiabetics with higher blood glucose levels, it was 40.4% (P < 0.001). The mortality rate among 276 diabetic patients was 17.7%. Admission blood glucose values may constitute an additional prognostic parameter for the clinical evaluation of patients with acute myocardial infarction. The presence of diabetes mellitus per se does not indicate a worse short term prognosis.
