The reproductive systems of Indoplanorbis exustus (Deshayes) (Planorbidae: Pulmonata) and Lymnae rubiginosa (Michelin) (Lymnaeidae: Pulmonata) a description in healthy and trematode habouring snails

The pathology of the reproductive system of snails infected with digeneans is described. Echinostoma malayanum invaded the gonad of Indoplanorbis exustus after 57 days, causing reduction in size of the gonad and interruption of gametogenesis; by 100 days, only a few acini with degenerating oocytes remained. The albumen glands, prostate and copulatory bursa were also affected but few parasites invaded the digestive gland or hepatopancreas. E. audyi in Lymnaea rubiginosa attacked the digestive gland and reduced the size of the gonad without actually invading it; spermatogenesis ceased and oocytes were reduced in size and number. The albumen gland and prostate were infected, with formation of fibrous tissue. Trichobilharzia brevis infected the digestive gland of L. rubiginosa and although the gonad was not invaded fibrous tissue filled its lumen and spermatogenesis ceased; oogonia and oocytes developed normally.
