Morphology of the Terminal Areas of White Females and Cysts of the Genus Heterodera (s.g. Globodera)

Studies of the cuticle of the posterior regions of white females and cysts of 6 species of Heterodera (subg. Globodera) were made with scanning electron and interference contrast microscopes. In white females the species could be separated on the basis of the length of the vulval aperture and the arrangement, number and size of the perineal tubercles and vulval bodies. In cysts, diagnostic characters are the presence or absence of a circumfenestral area and the width of the cuticular grooves. A table sets out the features of the terminal area in females of H. (G.) solanacearum, H. (G.) rostochiensis, H. (G.) tabacum and H. (G.) virginiae, and there is a key to these species and H. (G.) punctata and H. (G.) millefolii.
