Studies on "Corkscrew Penis" in the bull

In 27 bulls with spiral deviation of the penis before intromission, the breed incidence was Hereford 14 (11 poll, three horned), Jersey four, Aberdeen Angus four, Charollais two, Guernsey one, Poll Devon one, Friesian one. Variations are recorded in frequency of occurrence and in time of occurrence during service. In many cases the deviation first occurred at three or four years of age. Twelve bulls were operated upon surgically. Anchoring of the dorsal apical ligament to the tunica albuginea prevented spiral deviation in eight bulls; four returned to normal service performance but the others subsequently developed ventral deviations. In four other bulls this operation was combined with surgical shortening of the dorsal apical ligament; this elevated the end of the penis and all four bulls returned to normal service performance. Experiments suggest that the muscles of the sheath do not play a major part in the aetiology of the condition.
