The first paper is concerned with the problems facing the acquisition of customary land for national parks in Papua New Guinea and presents a short case study of the McAdam National Park. The second comprises a discussion of problems associated with the establishment of national parks and conservation areas, including: (1) resistance to sale or lease as the result of customary landownership; (2) people's dependence upon their land and their unwillingness to part with it; (3) other forms of land development are generally more profitable; (4) the government has bought land from people for large scale projects and consequently expectations for compensation are high; (5) inadequate funds for the National Parks Boards; (6) poor communication with local people; (7) lack of communication between land use agencies; and, (8) low government priority on park establishment.
