1. The new method consists of selecting groups of subjects with identical glucose tolerance when given the same amount of glucose by mouth or vein or tolbutamide by vein, thus avoiding problems associated with the use of the insulin:glucose ratio and with giving different amounts of insulin secretagogue. Young subjects released less insulin after stimulation with glucose and tolbutamide than older subjects of the same tolerance and maintained the same blood glucose value after stimulation with much lower plasma insulin concentrations than older subjects.
