The effect on gastric acid secretion of intravenous infusion of insulin was compared with that of rapid intravenous injection in insulin in 5 male patients with duodenal ulcer and 5 normal men. Insulin at 0.1 U/kg bodyweight h produced a peak acid secretory response similar to that produced by rapid intravenous injection of 0.2 U/kg bodyweight, but greater than that produced by infusion of 0.05 U/kg h. During the slow infusion there were a more gradual decrease in blood sugar and less untoward side effects than after rapid injection.
