Food security depends on how much is produced and available, and on how the available food is divided among nations, income groups, age groups, and betweeen people and animals. Though the world produces sufficient grains to prevent hunger, this would be dependant on a more equitable distribution of access and a dietary shift away from grain-fed food production. Improved access through more equitable income distribution is both an inter and an intra-national problems. The world grain situation and prospects are assessed in terms of real price trends and incentives, output, use and reserve stock. The importance and direction of trade in grains and the size of security reserves are considered for the developed countries, the developing nations and for the centrally planned economies. Consumption levels among nations are assessed and compared. The output, trade pattern and reserve stock of the ASEAN region are documented.
