Purification and some serological properties of staphylococcal nuclease

In vivo, Staphylococcus aureus produces a thermostable enzyme (nuclease) which splits desoxyribonucleic acid and ribonycleic acid, and this is an important difference from S. epidermidis. This paper describes the preparation of antiserum using purified nuclease inoculated into rabbits. The antiserum produced only one precipitation line in the agar gel diffusion test and immunoelectrophoresis when the purified nuclease or the culture fluid was used as antigen. It neutralized the activity of purified nuclease and of the nuclease of other staphylococci from cattle and chickens. The nucleases of the strains tested were antigenically identical. With the antiserum, the nuclease of S. aureus can be determined by CF.
