Adults of Blattella germanica (L.) were attached to blocks of plastic (to prevent self-contamination) and fed individually from capillary tubes on suspensions of Shigella flexneri and S. sonnei. S. flexneri was found in the gut and excrement and in washings from the body surface of the cockroaches for 3 days after infection, and S. sonnei was found for 8 days. It is suggested that cockroaches may be more important as potential vectors of Sonne dysentery than of Flexner dysentery.
