Microsporidosis in natural populations of cockroaches, Blattella germanica L. and Blatta orientalis L

Infections with the Microsporidian Pleistophora periplanetae were found for the first time in natural populations and laboratory colonies of Blattella germanica (L.) and Blatta orientalis L. in Leningrad (Soviet Union). The rates of infection in groups of dead and moribund cockroaches examined in the course of insecticide tests ranged from 23 to 61%. Notes are given on the structure and pathogenesis of the parasite. Infection rendered the cockroaches more susceptible to insecticides.
