This review highlights the main parasites that can be transmitted by transfusions with particular focus on their potential global threats. Included are the following parasitic infections: malaria, which is transmitted by 4 different species of Plasmodium (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae); Chagas disease; babesiosis; toxoplasmosis; and leishmaniasis. The respective vectors of these diseases are also mentioned. Issues on safety are discussed.
