The different viral (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus, human cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus), parasitic (malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, Chagas' disease, babesiosis and toxoplasmosis) and bacterial (syphilis, Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Brucella, Borrelia burgdorferi, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bacillus cereus, Yersinia enterocolitica and Pseudomonas) infections associated with blood transfusion are reviewed. Precautionary measures that can be implemented to prevent infections are recommended.
