A total of 555 monkeys imported directly from India, Malaysia and Ethiopia into Romania from August 1973 to March 1976 were examined for bacteria and intestinal parasites. 197 (85%) of 232 Cercopithecus aethiops, 116 (66%) of 147 Macaca mulatta and 148 (88%) of 176 M. cynomolgus were positive for parasites. Trichuris trichiura was found in 32%, Oesophagostomum opiostomum in 12%, Strongyloides fuelleborni in 10%, Ancylostoma duodenale in 7% and Ascaris lumbricoides in 6%. 32% of those with helminth infections also harboured pathogenic bacteria. The high prevalence of pathogenic associations contributed to the severity of the illnesses and extensive lesions in the intestine and other organs.
