Effect of ipronidazole on swine dysentery

Ipronidazole hydrochloride in concentrations of 1.0 mu g/ml or over was highly active against three strains of Treponema hyodysenteriae. Given daily in the food (100 g/ton), the drug prevented the development of diarrhoea among pigs in contact with experimentally infected pigs. Treatment of animals showing symptoms of swine dysentery with ipronidazole in drinking water (200-800 mg/gal) for 7 days was effective. Although a single intraperitoneal injection of 5 ml of a 5% solution of the drug resulted in remission of the symptoms of swine dysentery within 24 hours, the injection was mildly irritant and caused distress; some treated animals relapsed.
