Specimens of colonic mucosa from three pigs with artificially induced dysentery were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Specimens from the pig killed at 3 days after inoculation were essentially normal. At 5 and 8 days after inoculation, mucohaemorrhagic colitis was evident and spirochetes morphologically compatible with Treponema hyodysenteriae were present in large numbers on the epithelial surface and in the crypts of Lieberkuhn. Smaller numbers of a Vibrio-like organism were observed in association with the spirochetes.
