Cytological and cytochemical studies on mammilary secretion

The mammary secretions of 330 women were examined cytologically and cytochemically. A higher than normal cell count (i.e. >10 cells/high power field) was observed in 15% of cases and this was regarded as a risk factor, irrespective of the form and size of cells. 15% of the smears of bloody nipple secretions contained tumour cells. 85% of the smears examined represented a benign secreting mammary gland with 0-10 cells/high power field and desquamation of fattened ductular epithelium and histiocytes.
