The ovaries of M. merluccius were studied using cytological methods for mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. Mitochondria appear in early oocytes as fine granules, with a slight perinuclear concentration, As development proceeds, they show linear alignment. Later, the cytoplasm appears as a mesh-like structure with the mitochondria attached to its interlacing threads. In the advanced stages mitochondria are observed among the large yolk droplets occupying the spaces between them. The folicular epithelial cells contain numerous mitochondria. The stainability of the nucleus and oocyte cytoplasm in the different developmental stages was described in detail in Ag preparations. The Golgi apparatus appears in the form of granules of different sizes and spheres, in addition to some crescents and rings showing argentophil cortex and argentophobe medulla. In the advanced stages the Golgi bodies lie between the colorless and yellowish vacuoles. Golgi bodies are conspicuous in the follicular epithelial cells. Both the mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus participate in yolk formation.
