A case of trichinosis is described in a practicing Muslim man who had contracted the disease in Batna, Algeria. He developed the signs and symptoms of the disease on returning to France in November 2004. Although the patient claimed having only eaten mutton (an unusual host for Trichinella), investigation revealed he had also eaten a grilled leg of a jackal (Canis aureatus). A larvae obtained on muscle biopsy was identified as T. britovi through polymerase chain reaction. This is believed to be the first case of symptomatic trichinosis due to the consumption of jackal meat in Africa.
