Isolations of bovine syncytial virus from maternal and fetal blood

Bovine syncytial virus (BSV) was isolated from 17 of 122 maternal blood samples, from 3 of 146 foetal specimens and from 4 colostrum-deprived isolation-reared calves. Dams of all infected foetuses and calves were infected, thereby implicating them as the source of foetal infections. Results of serological tests and the absence of virus from semen indicated that sires are unlikely sources of foetal BSV infections.
