Mineral contents in fetal and maternal bovine blood-serum during the second half of pregnancy

In an experiment lasting for several years values were obtained for mineral content of blood of cows in the second half of pregnancy and that of their foetuses. Foetal blood was taken from the umbilical artery during caesarean section. Concentration of sodium was significantly lower in foetal than maternal serum; the opposite was true for potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Foetal serum had slightly more magnesium than had maternal serum. The mechanism of transfer of those elements across the placenta is discussed.
