Antibodies to egg-yolk semen diluent and bovine infertility: a preliminary report

Inoculations of Nagase egg-yolk diluent with sodium alginate adjuvant (A), or physiological saline (B), were given s/c to two groups of eight virgin heifers; five inoculations were given at three-weekly intervals. The heifers were served at the following oestrus, and slaughtered oe month after conception, of after repeated returns to service. Conception to first service was 25% in the group receiving A, and 62.5% in the group receiving B. No animal with a titre of 32 or greater conceived. Serum titres at first ranged from 0-512, but decreased with time, so that serum antibodies could not account for continued infertility. However, uterine titres were 16-32 at slaughter in three persistently infertile cows, and this may prove a relevant factor.
