1. At comparable concentrations of K+ in the medium, Nitrobacter winogradskyi grows better with less Ca++ present. Growth is optimal without the addition of Ca++. 2. At comparable concentrations of Ca++ growth of the bacteria is less with lower concentrations of K+. There is no growth without K+. 3. The action of K+ and Ca++ is strongly antagonistic. Under the experimental conditions chosen by us, growth of the bacteria is best with a molar ratio of the two cations in the medium approaching 550/1.
