The diagnosis of atrophic gastritis

To investigate the radiological diagnosis of atrophic gastritis radiological and histological findings of gastric mucosa and the measurement of gastric acid output have been compared in 88 patients with gastric disease. The finding of radiological gastric atrophy is significant as in most instances it indicated the presence of atrophic gastritis (false positive incidence 12%). It was possible to recognise severe grades of atrophic gastritis (78% accuracy in this series). Radiological findings and gastric acid output correlated well, whereas the correlation between the histological appearances and gastric acid output was less good. The failure to recognise atrophic gastritis was likely to be due either to a mild degree of gastritis or a patchy distribution of the lesion in the gastric mucosa. In the presence of a focal gastric lesion the radiological recognition of atrophic gastritis was more difficult, especially in less severe grades of the condition.
