Atrophic gastritis classification

Based upon endoscopic, histopathologic and immunologic studies of 71 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis seen in Shanghai, China, chronic atrophic gastritis classification of Strickland and Mackay was evaluated. From a morphological point of view, in agreement with Strickland and Mackay, chronic atrophic gastritis was divided into Types A and B. But parietal cell antibody (PCA) which helps in type differentiation was not found. For further discrimination, gastric analysis with pentagastrin and dynamic gastrin secretion stimulated by an augmented protein test meal seem to be useful guides. The latter test enabled a further division of Type B atrophic gastritis into 2 subtypes, B1 and B2.
