This article reports the occurrence of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) in pigs caused by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) in 8 farms in Bulgaria . All the farms had signs of PWMS including wasting, dyspnoea and pallor of the skin. Farms 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 had higher mortality (>30%) in postweaning pigs, while farms 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 also had skin lesions characteristic of PDNS. Postmortem examinations of 4-14 pigs from each farm confirmed the diagnosis of PMWS in farms 2, 3, 6 and 8 and PDNS in farm 8. Although PMWS was not confirmed on farms 1, 4, 5 and 7, its presence can not be ruled out since only a proportion of the pigs examined postmortem were further analysed histopathologically. This is the first report of PCV-2-induced PMWS and PDNS in pigs in Bulgaria.
