This is a detailed account of leptospirosis as it occurred in animals and man in Bulgaria from 1954 to 1986. During that time 18 serovars of the pathogenic species Leptospira interrogans were isolated from man, farm and domestic animals, wild rodents, hedgehogs and shrews and 9 serovars of the saprophytic L. biflexa. Serovar bulgarica was first isolated in Bulgaria in 1951. Four more new pathogenic and 6 new saprophytic serovars have now been identified, namely sofia and balcanica from human cases, srebarna from a shrew and tsartsova (still to be officially recognized) of serogroup Pomona, from the mouse Microtus minutus. The 6 new serovars of L. biflexa were all isolated from water.
