Antifertility screening of plants--effect of four indigenous plants on early pregnancy in female albino rats

The petroleum ether, alcoholic and aqueous extracts of 4 plants reputed to have antifertility activity, were tested in female albino rats by a method which would detect any anti-zygotic, blastocystotoxic, anti-implantation or early abortifacient activity. Of the 4 plants tested, the alcoholic extract of Cuminum cyminum (seeds) and Hyptis suaveolens (leaves) showed 100% antifertility effect at a dose of 150 mg/kg and 125 mg/kg, respectively. All 3 extracts of Dolichos biflorus (seeds) and Trianthema pentandra (leaves) failed to show any antifertility activity.
